Hale Makana O Moʻiliʻili provides 105 affordable kūpuna rental housing units to the community of Moʻiliʻili in Honolulu. As rents continue to rise at alarming levels on the island of Oahu, all members of our community are under duress to find quality affordable housing.
Drawing inspiration from Moʻiliʻili's rich history, our project, Hale Makana O Moʻiliʻili, is a haven for kūpuna aged 55 and older. Nestled within the historic ahupuaʻa of Waikiki, once a flourishing tapestry of agriculture and aquaculture, this community aims to emulate the rejuvenating spirit of the streams that once flowed through the area.
Recognizing the challenges faced by kūpuna in Hawaii, our focus is on providing a solution for the elderly to live in secure affordable housing. Unfortunately, we are in a day-in-age where many young people seek more affordable living on the mainland, however many kūpuna often find it challenging to leave the islands. A large population of kūpuna currently reside in overcrowded or dilapidated homes, while assisted living facilities pose a significant financial burden. Our mission is to offer truly affordable housing, tailored for independent kūpuna, providing them with a new lease on life.
Hale Makana O Moʻiliʻili is designed for kūpuna with incomes no more than 60% of the area median income. This community aspires to be more than just affordable housing; it is a place where kūpuna can find a renewed sense of purpose, take on new challenges, and cherish their golden years in a supportive and enriching environment.
Uniquely perched at the corner of Algaroba Street and Makahiki Way, this development has quality pedestrian accessibility to services that cater to kūpuna within the community. The prime location, in the Moʻiliʻili neighborhood, provides kūpuna access to all necessities that would make residing at the site quite suitable. The project has great walkability as it is next to the City Library, City Park and Health Clinic.
The development consists of new construction on a site that totals 17,743 SF. This 6-story building consists of 105 studio and one-bedroom units, on-site parking and a community resource center. The residences were constructed from level 2 to level 6 (concrete podium over parking and community space). Other on-site amenities include a computer lab, a multi-purpose room for social gatherings, a laundry facility, and the site takes advantage of amazing views and nice breezes.
An allocation of 4% low-income housing tax credits and tax-exempt bonds from the Hawaiian Housing Finance and Development Corporation (HHFDC) helped finance this affordable rental housing project in 2019.
